A seven-month, 3 300km trek along the coast that highlighted the importance of a litter-free South Africa and led to the establishment of the country's foremost for-good marketing agency and brand activation company.
Michael Baretta and his friend Camilla Howard were inspired to do something bold after listening to a talk by David Grier, who ran a daily marathon along South Africa’s coast.
Trekking for Trash was the result, and after 18 months of planning, with sponsorship from Nampak’s CAN DO! campaign, the pair set off to walk the length of South Africa’s coastline and draw attention to the country’s litter problem.
By the end, they’d picked up 7,2 tons of litter, generated nearly R20-million in PR, engaged communities including almost 20 000 learners and built a significant following. The success of the project highlighted the fact that South Africa needed a social marketing agency that could build brands, drive sales and do good at the same time.
